COURSE DESCRIPTION
This training will help attendees explore in greater depth the core elements required for a treatment to be defined as “evidence based”. Through that lens, the pros and cons of using or adapting treatments away from their evidence-base will be explored, with an emphasis on how the ethics guiding mental health practice interplay with the delivery of pseudoscientific practices. The distinctions between invalidated and unvalidated interventions will also be explored. Clinicians will leave this event being able to understand how evidence based treatments are determined, identify warning signs for pseudoscientific practices, and discuss the ethical considerations of making well-informed, clinically sound choices around treatment.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define evidence-based practice
- Define evidence-based treatment
- Name at least 3 pros and 3 cons of using treatment outside of an evidence-based model
- Identify potential harms of pseudoscientific treatment
