COURSE DESCRIPTION
Zen practice is a discipline that originated from Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism. Originally known as Chan “quietude”, It was believed to be started in the sixth century by the Indian monk Bodhidharma. From China, Chan spread to Japan in the twelfth century, where it became known as Zen which is simply Japanese for Mediation. Marsha Linehan in a quest to bring acceptance to her treatment studied Zen. The principles and practice of Zen are interwoven throughout Dialectical Behavior Therapy. This workshop will discuss the historical principles and benefits of Zen practice. It will include didactics, discussion, and practice.
As a result of this training participants will be able to develop and/or sustain a personal mindfulness practice
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe ways of starting or sustaining a personal practice
- List at least three benefits of mindfulness practice
- Describe the origin of Zen in DBT
- List at least three ways in which Zen and Behavior Therapy differ
- List at least three ways in which Zen and Behavior Therapy are compatible
- Describe the importance of being mind and doing mind
- List the Four noble truths and the relationship to DBT
- Describe the importance of Mindfulness practice to Validation
- Describe the importance of willingness in acceptance
Instructor | Randy Wolbert Zen Master Serene Cloud (寂雲 Jaku-un)
Randy was a student of Marsha Linehan Roshi and Gregory Mayers Roshi. In 2016 he was given authorization to teach in the Empty Cloud Lineage of Zen by Willigis Jager Roshi. This was confirmed by Linehan Roshi in 2018. Having completed koan study with Mayers he received transmission as a Zen Master in 2021. He is the 89th successor to Shakyamuni Buddha and the 47 Successor of Lin-Chi. When Marsh Linehan retired from Zen teaching in 2018, Randy took over the role as the authorized teacher for Empty Cloud Sangha, Inc.
In addition to Zen sesshins in the United States he has lead sesshins and Zen Based Mindfulness Trainings in 12 different countries. He has 34 Zen students from around the world.
He remains actively affiliated with the Empty Cloud Lineage in Germany and with Greg Mayers and his dharma heirs.
Randy is a highly experienced trainer of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). He was a full-time and contractual DBT trainer with Behavioral Tech for 25 years, the dissemination organization established by DBT founder, Marsha Linehan.
Prior to his role at Behavioral Tech, Wolbert worked for 25 years as the Clinical Director of InterAct of Michigan, where he had responsibility for several teams, including those covering DBT, dual disorders, and assertive community treatment.
A Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), He was previously a Board Member of the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification.
Instructor | Julianne Ballón-Casement, MSW, LCSW, became a member of the Empty Cloud Sangha in 2010. In 2011 she was among Marsha Linehan, PhD, Rōshi’s first Zen students, alongside Randy Wolbert, MSW, Rōshi. A committed practitioner, Julianne has participated in numerous silent retreats including annual sesshins at the Redemptorist Retreat Center in Tucson, AZ and various locations across Seattle, San Francisco, South America, and Barcelona. In 2019, Julianne assumed the role of timekeeper (jikki) for the sangha’s silent retreats taking over from Randy Wolbert, Rōshi. She currently serves on the board of the organization and chairs the scholarship committee.
Julianne’s Zen practice complements her passion for offering pro-bono psychotherapy for those participating in services offered by Immigrants Rising. She takes great joy in delving into the rich history of the Port of Los Angeles, often exploring it with her husband, John. This enthusiasm for history follows a rewarding career as a psychiatric social worker, where Julianne honed her skills as an intensively trained DBT therapist. She has spent several years as part of a comprehensive DBT team and co-taught 40-hour DBT foundational trainings. Throughout her journey, she has made significant contributions in private practice, community agencies, and county organizations, truly making a difference in the lives of others.
CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS
Participants who complete the entirety of this training will earn 12 CE hours.

Private Training Requests
Portland DBT Institute training is available to schedule as a private training for your group. PDBTI’s training team travels locally, nationally, and internationally, to provide evidence based, adherent DBT training. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
A $60.00 handling fee will be deducted upon cancellation. Refund requests by email must be received two weeks before the start date. In addition, the fees are non-transferrable.
PDBTI reserves the right to cancel any program due to under-enrollment, or any course due to work stoppages, instructor illness or inclement weather. If a course is cancelled, PDBTI is responsible for refunding only the course fee.
