COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This introductory training focuses on the core components of Behavioral Activation (BA) and strategies to implement BA with diverse patients guided by the Multicultural Orientation Model. As an evidence-based psychotherapeutic intervention (EBPI) for depression and other co-morbid conditions, BA has been demonstrated to be effective for patients across developmental age, with diverse intersectional identities, who live in different countries and settings.

This training will review the core components of Multicultural Orientation Model: (1) cultural humility; (2) cultural comfort; and (3) affirming style to respond to cultural opportunities in therapy. This culturally humble framework will then be used to guide clinicians when implementing the core Behavioral Activation strategies: (1) providing BA rationale; (2) BA assessments; (3) activity scheduling; (4) behavioral strategies to reduce avoidance and increase activation. Experiential learning strategies (e.g., modeling, role-playing) will be utilized in the training to enhance skills acquisition.
