This introductory training focuses on the core components of Behavioral Activation (BA) and strategies to implement BA with diverse patients guided by the Multicultural Orientation Model. As an evidence-based psychotherapeutic intervention (EBPI) for depression and other co-morbid conditions, BA has been demonstrated to be effective for patients across developmental age, with diverse intersectional identities, who live in different countries and settings.

This training will review the core components of Multicultural Orientation Model: (1) cultural humility; (2) cultural comfort; and (3) affirming style to respond to cultural opportunities in therapy. This culturally humble framework will then be used to guide clinicians when implementing the core Behavioral Activation strategies: (1) providing BA rationale; (2) BA assessments; (3) activity scheduling; (4) behavioral strategies to reduce avoidance and increase activation. Experiential learning strategies (e.g., modeling, role-playing) will be utilized in the training to enhance skills acquisition.

Upon completion of this two-day training, participants will be able to:

  1. Utilize the Multicultural Orientation Model to guide culturally responsive Behavioral Activation (BA) implementation.
  2. Describe the three core components of Multicultural Orientation Model.
  3. Describe the four core BA strategies.
  4. Identify behavioral strategies to overcome barriers to activation.

This training is suitable for mental health professionals at all levels of training.

Participants who complete both training days will earn 12 CE hours. This training is not eligible for partial credits.
